Shown here are pictures of Target CDs from my collection for artists beginning with the letters U through Z. Featured are particularly rare and otherwise interesting discs.

u2-war.jpg

West German Target of U2 War (Island, catalog number 90067-2).  This is the common variation of this Target CD.  It is noteworthy by virtue of the combination of a dark green target and purple coating, which it would appear was reserved for the Island label.  Note that a rare U.S. Target of Howard Jones Dream Into Action has a lighter green target and purple coating.  A rare variation of War having a different color scheme is shown below.

West German Target of U2 War (Island, catalog number 90067-2).  This is an extremely rare variation and should be compared to the common variation shown above.  The combination of a purple target and light green coating was used for Target CDs on the WEA label, but this disc still shows the Island logo and catalog number.  As such, this disc is assumed to be a manufacturing error.

van-halen-debut-32xd.jpg

Japanese Target of Van Halen Van Halen (Warner Bros., catalog number 32XD-353). This disc was pressed in Japan by CBS/Sony for release in Japan.

van-halen-debut-japan.jpg

Japanese Target of Van Halen Van Halen (Warner Bros., catalog number 3075-2). This rare disc with the silver paint coating was pressed in Japan by JVC for release in the U.S.  A similar Target pressing with no paint coating is considerably more common.

van-halen-1984-32xd.jpg

Japanese Target of Van Halen 1984 (Warner Bros., catalog number 32XD-313). This disc was pressed in Japan by CBS/Sony for release in Japan.

van-halen-1984-japan.jpg

Japanese Target of Van Halen 1984 (Warner Bros., catalog number 9 23985-2). This is a rare variation by virture of the silver paint coating that was pressed by JVC for the U.S. market.  As with the U.S. issue of Van Halen, a Japanese Target pressing of 1984 without the paint coating is much more common.

vision-quest-target_no-coating.jpg

Japanese Target of the motion picture soundtrack to Vision Quest (Geffen, catalog number 9 24063-2). This is a rare variation with no paint coating. A more common variation was issued with a silver paint coating.

watanabe-fill-night.jpg

Japanese Target of Sadao Watanabe Fill Up The Night (Elektra, catalog number 38XD-1). This disc was pressed in Japan by CBS/Sony for release in Japan. It has “CSR COMPACT DISC” repeating in the plastic ring. This disc is very rare.

watanabe-rendezvous.jpg

Japanese Target of Sadao Watanabe Rendezvous (Elektra, catalog number 38XD-2). Like the Fill Up The Night Target above, this disc was pressed in Japan by CBS/Sony for release in Japan. It has “CSR COMPACT DISC” repeating in the plastic ring. This disc is also very rare.

whispers-target.jpg

West German Target of The Whispers So Good (Solar, catalog number 9 60356-2). This is one of only four Targets to have been released on the Solar label and to bear the combination of a silver target and lavender coating.  The other three discs are West German Targets of Midnight Star Planetary Invasion and the Shalamar albums Friends and Heartbreak.  This Whispers Target is very difficult to find in my experience.

neil-young-harvest-japan.jpg

Japanese Target of Neil Young Harvest (Reprise, catalog number 2277-2). This disc was pressed by the CTA plant for release in the U.S. and is harder to find than the West German Target pressing.

neil-young-harvest-us.jpg

U.S. Target of Neil Young Harvest (Warner Bros./Reprise, catalog number 2277-2). This disc was pressed in the U.S. by PDO. Note that it shows the Warner Bros. logo, whereas the Japanese Target pressing above bears the Reprise logo.  The inserts with both issues show the record label as Reprise.  The West German Target shows the Warner Bros. logo on the disc and Reprise on the inserts.  Although this U.S. Target seems to be more common than most other U.S. Targets, it is still scarce and harder to find than the West German Target.

U.S. Target of Neil Young Harvest (Warner Bros./Reprise, catalog number 2277-2). This disc was pressed in the U.S. by PDO. Note that this disc has the reverse color scheme of the U.S. pressing above.  This “reverse” Target pressing is very rare.

zz-top-deguello.jpg

West German Target of ZZ Top Deguello (Warner Bros., catalog number 3361-2). This Target is highly desirable with collectors.  A West German non-Target pressing is more common and not nearly as sought after.
